Most of us have been there. Everyone is excited for the family vacation and can not wait to get it started. The only problem is, that if you are driving, there could be several hours, if not days of sitting in the family vehicle in close proximity to everyone in the family. Here are some great tips that may make your next long road trip a little more pleasant and enjoyable.

Make sure everyone uses the restroom before you take off and at every stop. There is nothing more frustrating to mom and dad then to just get underway and have someone in the car that willingly needs to go to the restroom.

Pack some light snacks. “I'm hungry” is a line that every parent is used to hearing while going on long drives. Having some light snacks that you can pass in between meals can get you a few miles down the road. Keep them light so it does not make everyone feel full or lethargic.

Bring some car games. Your local store will typically have some good car games that can be played to pass the time and keep the youngger ones entertained. If you do not find any at the local store, check one of the truck stops along the way.

Make regular stops every 100-150 miles. This will keep the whining and complaints to a minimum, whether it is pottie breaks, hunger or just to stretch you legs.

Switch up where everyone sets. Keep it lively by changing up where each person sits after every stop. Variety is always good so no one gets tired of where they sit or who they are sitting next to.

Bring some good books. Whether you want to read on your own or maybe read out loud so all the family can enjoy, interesting books can easily pass some time and keep everyone's interest.

Why I Love Portland, Oregon!

My next door neighbor just returned from a few days in Portland, OR. His stories reminded me of how much I love Portland. I am so overdue for a visit.

Portland is my favorite long weekend getaway. Seattle is closer to Vancouver but, for me, it is too much the same as what we have right here. Portland's architecture is older and homier (a real plus for me) and there are more things to see and do than you can fit into a weekend. Here are a few of my favorites –

Powell's Book Store – I love books and I have been known to spend a whole afternoon in this store. It is like no other store you've visited, except maybe Harrods in London. The store takes up a whole city block and each genre has its own room. They sell both new and used books, placing them side by side on the shelf so you can see a wide variety of prices for each title, depending on the condition of the book.

Lan Su Chinese Garden – This is exactly like the gardens I fell in love with in China. It is totally authentic and oh, so relaxing. In 1999, 65 workman came from Portland's sister city in China to build this garden bringing with them huge pieces of wood and rocks from their homeland. It is definitely a “must see”.

Did you know that Portland's Oregon Zoo started out in the back of a drug store in the mid 1800's? Committed to the conservation of endangered species and their habitats, it has become a center for wildlife conservation and field research. The exhibits represent many geographical regions of the world. You will not find a better place for a family outing!

If you're a gardener, you will not want to miss Portland's fantastic rose garden . They are continuously experimenting with different varieties. You can find roses in every color under the sun.

The city has become renowned for its craft beers . You can do a tour to all the craft breweries and compare their techniques. Or maybe you want to try a tasting walk of the wide selection of food carts found in the downtown core.

On the weekends the Saturday Market is a must. They call it the Saturday Market but it is open both Saturday and Sunday. Of course a trip to Portland would not be complete without shopping spree – they have no sales tax!

There is no shortage of fine restaurants, coffee shops, and evening entertainment to suit every taste. And if you can stay a little longer than just a weekend, you are only 90 minutes away from the sand dunes of the Oregon Coast or the ski hills of Mount Hood. A trip to the Columbia River Gorge only takes 45 minutes from downtown Portland.

You may want to start planning your own trip to this city of bridges! I know I'm already thinking about my own!

During the holiday season there are more vehicles on the road than at any other time of the year. It is the time of the year when the schools are closed and most people take their annual vacation. More cars are sharing the road with cargo trucks so truck drivers need to take extra precautions when traveling to their destinations.

Certain countries have cities that are far apart and it may take a day or two to reach the destination. Driving for this length of time introduces fatigue and exhaustion. A truck driver needs to manage their drive carefully to avoid fatigue. It is recommended that the driver make regular stops at each fuel station and take a short brisk walk. This will allow for the circulation in your legs to improve as you were probably sitting and driving for about 3 to 4 hours. Getting out of the vehicle also allows you to get fresh air which your brain and body will need to proceed on the journey.

While you are driving, be extra careful when trying to overtake another vehicle. Check that you can not see any cars in the distance. Many people underestimate the distance and the speed of the oncoming car, and this is when accidents occurs. Be especially careful if you have a trailer hooked. The swerving out and back into the lane motion of overtaking can cause your trailer to sway if you overtake too quickly. The suspension trailer could cause you to lose control of the vehicle and make an accident.

Avoid driving beyond the yellow line. You do not know if there is a vehicle or pedestrian that is stranded on the shoulder of the highway. If you are driving at a high speed, you will not be able to stop in time so you could hit that vehicle or swerve uncontrollably. Rather be safe in the correct lane and stick to the speed limit. Trucks should drive a bit slower than the speed limit as they require a longer stopping distance.

The truck driver should do a safety check of the truck and trailer before he departs on his journey. Check that there are no loose hanging parts that could fall off during the journey. Ensure that all the truck and trailer parts are serviced so that the vehicle is able to end the long drive.

These are some truck safety tips that drivers should practice while sharing the road with other vehicles during the holiday season. The added safety will ensure that you arrive at your destination and that no one else's holiday is affected by carelessness.

The Most Clean and Green Tourist Spot in Mexico

Most tourists in Mexico have simple needs for their vacation time: sandy beaches, hot weather, and a party atmosphere. Some tourists look for a more authentic cultural experience or opportunities to connect with nature, which Mexico offers in abundance.

Connecting with nature is usually not a priority in the larger tourist centers. The natural environment mostly serves as the background for tourist activities – it represents the postcard fantasy that attracts visitors who typically give little or no thought about the cleanliness of the air, water, and soil (or sand). The local environment is not given much thought by foreigners or by Mexicans, so it's no surprise that environmental pollution is a large, but terribly ignored, problem.

The dumping of untreated sewage and garbage into rivers and coastal waters is among the worst of Mexico's sins against the environment. Generally, I have seen the worst environmental practices in beach towns and resort areas, which makes the resort area of Huatulco an even more impressive achievement. Clear water at every beach, tap water you can drink, recycling programs, and an absence of garbage on the manicured streets and boulevards – Huatulco is a different reality in a country known for loose regulation and management of many things that are taken for granted in more developed nations.

Huatulco is a relatively small and unknown resort area centered near the town of La Crucecita in the state of Oaxaca (pronounced wa-ha-ca), on Mexico's southern Pacific coast. Developed years after Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and other popular destinations, Huatulco was designed to be a clean, green destination. The results of such planning and management are clear, especially through the area's nine bays and 36 beaches. Every beach I visited had crystal-clear water, which made it easy to enjoy the schools of fish swimming around me. Visibility for snorkeling is often deep as thirty feet.

Modern water treatment plants enable the clean water and beaches in the Huatulco bay area. Several local beaches have been certified as 'Blue Flag' and 'Clean Beach', which are global standards. Huatulco was also the first tourist community in North America to be certified by EarthCheck, the world's leading scientific benchmarking certification group for the tourism industry.

The international recognition is for Huatulco's policies and efforts in energy and water consumption, recycling, waste and sewage treatment, and low carbon emissions. Habitat conservation is also part of the commitment. The government limits commercial and residential development to a mere 28 percent of the coastal area – the rest is designated as nature preserve that is never to be developed. It's surprising and absolutely inspiring to see that the majority of the area's coastline is completely undeveloped, including several bays that are accessible only by boat. UNESCO designated the Municipality of Santa Maria Huatulco and Huatulco National Park as a biosphere reserve.

The people of Huatulco know that the area is special and there is an authentic pride behind the tourism promotion and hospitality. The hotel association and tourism office were very responsive to my visit and I experienced a range of hotels and attractions in the area:

Hotel Binneguada: a beautifully maintained colonial style property that was the first hotel built in Huatulco. Popular with young families, it's centrally-located and employs some of the most cheerful staff I've seen anywhere.

Villas Fa-Sol: a small, unique beachfront getaway in a gorgeous garden setting with Mediterranean-style suites. It's a family-owned property that represents Huatulco's unique qualities: tranquil, green, authentic, warm hospitality.

Dreams Huatulco: a large, all-inclusive resort hotel on one of the best swimming beaches in the area. Crystal-clear water directly in front of large resorts like Dreams demonstrates the real difference between Huatulco and every other tourist center on Mexico's Pacific coast.

Villa Azomalli: a large villa home with ocean and mountain views. Well-suited for small groups, weddings. A wonderful Mexican chef prepared our meals, a key feature of the private villa experience.

Marina Park Plaza: a newer condo hotel popular with Canadians and Americans. The large condo apartments with kitchens attract guests for longer stays of 2 weeks to 2 months or more. Their staff was bilingual and very professional.

Castillo Huatulco: a smaller, all-inclusive hotel with a beach club on Chahue Beach. Castillo is a very friendly place where guests got to know each other quickly. It's an older property that clearly has a loyal guest following.

Temazcal Prehispanico: a wonderful place where we enjoyed Temazcal 'sauna' sessions, aromatherapy, music therapy, mud applications for the skin, and massage. A unique experience and very affordable, much like Huatulco in general.

Copalita Ecological Park: The earliest remains of this pre-Hispanic archaeological site date back 2,500 years. Ancient buildings, a museum with beautiful artifacts, and walking trails that overlook the Copalita river and beach.

“We want Huatulco to be set apart from other destinations, to be recognized as a sustainable green tourist place,” says Estepania Hernández Sánchez of the Huatulco tourism office. “Huatulco tourists want to visit a peaceful place that is ideal to rest and enjoy nature,” she adds. “For us, it is important to offer clean beaches and green areas not only because it gives a better quality of life to the local community but also a better experience to tourists.”

Tourists in Huatulco certainly benefit from those quality of life advantages, whether or not they appreciate that the water they swim and shower in, is clean. Or that the seafood they eat comes from clean waters.

Huatulco is a hidden gem, a bright green spot in Mexico's environmental greyness and tourist center overdevelopment. Fortunately, it's not for everyone. Huatulco joins people who care about its unique qualities; people who are not looking for just another place with hot weather and cheap beer. The best ambassadors of Huatulco will continue to spread the word to those who desire clean, green, authentic tourism.

Using a luggage tag is certainly the best way to avail a difference and uniqueness for your important luggage. There are however a few problems with some people especially those who are frequent travelers as they find it difficult to have a personalized travel luggage. A luggage tag is helpful as it can assist you in finding your bag very easily especially when you are traveling by plan and have to pick it up from the airport. This tag can also help you in case your luggage is lost as you can mark your contact details on the luggage. The benefit is not only locating your luggage but also preventing any one else from stealing it. The benefits have been listed below in detail.

Benefits of tags

1. It is extremely easy to identify your luggage in a case when there is a similar design that obviously belongs to another person or fellow traveler.

2. It can also be used to prevent someone else from picking up your luggage and this is especially during an airport transit.

3. It can very well help you to reduce a chance for your luggage to be stolen and this is because any thief would prefer to steal luggage that is not market appropriately.

4. In case your baggage is misfiled to another destination, it will be easy to send it to your correct destination.

In other words, it can be felt that the above mentioned benefits are only for those who travel by air. However it can also be beneficial to people who travel in groups by bus, a coach or any other kind of transportation as a misdirected luggage can always happen in any type of situation.

So it is compulsory to have a tag on your luggage. There are also some providers who have many more alternatives for customers such as leather luggage tags. It is a universal fact that leather is much more durable, it looks neat and clean and it is also much more luxurious compared to any other material. So this kind of luggage is becoming extremely popular in recent times. These luggage tags can also be purchased in bulk or individually. For all those people who already have a complete set of luggage, they can buy the tags in bulk and attach these tags to each and every luggage of theirs. It is one of the important things to remember.

Using Fastpass+ at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom Park

Deciding on Fastpass + reservations can be a stressful part of vacation planning. It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what you want to do and when you want to do it 60 days in advance, especially on your first trip to Walt Disney World! This is where the expertise of a travel agent can provide a piece of mind and take some of that stress off for you. I am always happy to help my clients plan for their Fastpass + reservations and troubleshoot itinerary concerns. As this process is typically tailor to the family's interests and preferences it is difficult to capture in a single blog post. Instead, I provide a list of attractions available for Fastpass + and a general sense of when I would consider a Fastpass + reservation and why.

Booking Animal Kingdom Fastpass + Reservations

Like Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom does not have a tiering system for Fastpass +. That means you can choose three of any of these options without having to choose one from a certain grouping and two of another. You can book three Fastpass + reservations per day of your stay that you have tickets for.

Top Choices for Animal Kingdom Fastpass + Reservations

  • DINOSAUR: A thrill ride in a jeep traveling through time to the Jurassic period to save a dino … no wonder the lines get long. Lines here are mainly covered and air conditioned but worth a while regarding Fastpass +.
  • Kali River Rapids: On a hot summer day many people would agree there's nothing like a water ride in the middle of the day to cool you off. It's no surprise lines can get long for Kali River Rapids during the summer. For fall, winter, and early spring travelers you may find the opposite to be true. If you decide to ride during these months it's best to have a change of clothes. I ended up purchasing a towel because I was too cold to ride the air conditioned bus back to the resort! You may get SOAKED.
  • Expedition Everest: One of the most thrilling coasters at Walt Disney World, it even goes backwards! There is, however, a single rider line for this attraction for those wishing to save the Fastpass + reservation. Though you may not get to ride with your party, you will be able to experience the attraction with a less intensive wait.
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris: Who does not love the close encounterers with majestic wild animals offered by Kilimanjaro Safaris. For me, my trip to Animal Kingdom would not be complete without it. The only reason this is not highlighted and bolded though is timing is everything. This would be an attraction I would opt to go right to at drop drop instead of using Fastpass +. Why? Not only will the lines be shorter, but the animals are more active earlier in the morning especially in the summer.

Additional Decent Choices for Fastpass +

  • Meet Favorite Disney Pals at Adventurers Outpost: For those traveling with small children or those who do not enjoy thrill rides, meeting your favorite Disney pals might just be the best use of your Fastpass + reservation. Meet Mickey and Minnie in full safari gear.
  • Primeval Whirl: Not a favorite of many “veteran” disney goers, but a thrill ride coaster for those looking for some adventure. This is a spinning coaster inside the Dino-Rama corner of Animal Kingdom. Not bad for a Fastpass +.
  • Festival of the Lion King: Although I would not ordinarily recommend a show for Fastpass + since you can typically get in if you get to a show at least 15 minutes in advance, it's slim pickings in Animal Kingdom for that third Fastpass + specifically for younger children . Since this show takes place in a newly remodeled arena, the popularity increase could warrant a fastpass + reservation during peak seasons.

Attractions that Fastpass + Would not Typically Be Recommended For

  • Finding Nemo – The Musical: As long as you get there about 15-20 minutes before the show, you should be fine … no Fastpass + necessary!
  • Flights from Wonder: Same as above.
  • It's Tough to Be a Bug !: The most you will wait for this attraction is a couple cycles of the 3D movie. No Fastpass + necessary!

How to Happily Survive a Terribly Long Flight

The misery of painfully cramped legs and sored necks, being sleep deprived and some continuous anxiety attacks; this is what defines long haul flights for many. Plane journeys have become much more comfortable than what it was like in the past. But that does not change how awful it can be to become stuck in a plane seat, high up in the skies and struggling to kill time. This can become even more challenging in the economy class where there are limited facilities and strictly any luxuries.

Since this is one of the essential experiences that you would have to go through inevitably, here are some of the sure shot ways to avoid the misery of a terribly long flight.

1. Keep the Entertainment Strong

After all the facilities onboard, you have to prepare yourself to face the worst. This is one of the most important things to remember if you're planning to take a long haul flight. Because your sleep will often be restless, keeping yourself entertained along the journey is the best way to kill time no matter how long the flight maybe. It should be great to carry plenty of devices, the ones you can easily take care of. Charging them before your departure is extremely important. You would know best of what entertains you well. Downloading movies and shows can help you a great deal because they'll occupy a lot of your travel time. If you're an avid reader, it would be great to stock books well; e-readers can do an equally good job!

2. Sleep

You must sleep because no matter what you do along the way, nothing replaces the benefits of sleeping. No one would want to land at their destination, wretched and restless. To increase your chances of getting good sleep inflight, it is important to avoid alcohol whenever you can. If you must sip on something, opt for water or Chamomile tea. Investing in a neck pillow and eye mask would also make things better for you. Relaxing your mind and meditating would also help to relax your nerves and get a few hours of rest inflight.

3. Stay Casual

Because there are a lot of standard steps that you would have to take while traveling, it can often become very robotic. To make your traveling experience less stiff, it is important to stay casual. You can do this by dressing well. Although you must sensibly pick up your travel attire, making them too formal is going to be extremely uncomfortable. A super comfortable outfit is necessary if you wish to enjoy your long haul flight. Carrying a pair of comfortable socks and a little blanket with you in the plane can make you cozy, especially during the night flights.

Planning an Outstanding Family Road Trip

Despite all its ups and downs and a thrilling roller coaster ride, family road trips are highly recommended. The best aspect of these trips is the flexibility you can enjoy, driving by and stopping whenever you wish. There's no better way to connect with your family and really enjoy some quality time. The wonders of…

Despite all its ups and downs and a thrilling roller coaster ride, family road trips are highly recommended. The best aspect of these trips is the flexibility you can enjoy, driving by and stopping whenever you wish.

There's no better way to connect with your family and really enjoy some quality time. The wonders of a family road trip can only be enjoyed if a high level of planning is done. Despite the best plans, a lot can awfully go wrong. It can turn out to be nightmarish if you're traveling with little children where a smooth ride looks like a dream you can not achieve.

With all these reality checks in mind, undetected family road trips are the most rewarding journeys you can possibly take. Let's take a look at some of the finest ways to survive them.

1. Create a Master Plan

Just knowing where you're traveling to would not so awful elsewhere, but it's certainly on a family road trip. Thorough planning is one essential ingredient for the recipe of a wonderful family road trip. Although it might seem very thrilling to dump everything in a car and enjoy the roads, the challenges are many. The map is the key to survive it, and it is important to trace your route before you travel. Spending some time after family dinners can be ideal to chalk out a sensible plan. It's extremely important to engage your children and take their help. While you're planning, it is wise to consider several important aspects such as the budget, stopovers, car conditions and the weather forecasts.

2. Stopping should be Meaningful

When traveling with kids, you can have a no-stop journey. This is because they'll become extremely restless and would want to escape the prison-like seatbelts. Meaningful stopovers are very important for your family. Many places in-between would have interesting attractions to look at. Where there is nothing substantial, it would be great to make your own ones. Encourage your children to pick up symbolic things from the destination, such as sand, stickers or unique leaves so that they can put them up in their scrapbook. Focusing on the 'now' is extremely important if you want to truly enjoy the road trip!

3. The Distance Check

Reality checks are essential if you're planning a road trip with your family. Even when you can happily drive non-stop on your own, do not assume the same for your little children. Little ones can become really cranky and give you a tough time while traveling. Constantly nagging and questioning about the remaining journey time is must experience on a family road trip. Being realistic about the duration is important for you so you can keep your children entertained along the way.

Disney's Magical Express – DME – is Disney's complimentary motor coach transportation from Orlando International Airport to Disney owned resorts.

DME also comes with “two” luggage services. The first one being that they will take charge of your luggage. This is an optional service and not one that I've taken advantage of myself, as I do not think it's a big deal to have my luggage with me and just roll it, but it is something that a lot of people use. Basically Disney will be in charge of your checked luggage from the moment you hand it over to airport personnel before your departure flight from home. You can than expect to receive your luggage within three hours of your arrival, the luggage will be delivered to your room and you do not have to wait for it. That means you can enjoy anything you want to enjoy the day you get there without having to worry about your luggage. And this is where the convenience comes from. If using the service you want to have a carry-on or a personal item that has your magic bands, credit cards, money, medication and any other things you would need for the next couple of hours. If you go with this option make sure to book / request DME more than a month in advance because they will have to send you specialized yellow luggage tags.

Your other option is to just have your luggage with you at all times. When you get off your plane go to baggage claim, grab your bags, and walk over with your bags to the Disney Magical Express Welcome Center. Right before getting on the bus, the driver will take the baggage from you and place it in the cargo area under the bus. When you get off at your resort he will take it out for you. The neat thing is that even if you arrive at your resort and your room is not ready bellhop will hold your bags for you while you go and enjoy anything that you need to. At which point, once you get back, you can then either visit bellhop and pick up your bags or you can call and have them take them your room. This option is available for last minute DME bookings ..

Both solutions are really easy, super convenient, and great. Which one you choose will depend on your itinerary, what's going on with your vacation, and which you prefer.

I've seen both negative and positive reviews about DME, mostly positive. What I can say is that the major of the negative reviews I have seen are because people had to either wait a long time to get a bus or the commute from the airport to their actual resort took awhile. The reason that this can happen is because usually a few resorts will share a bus. I have never experienced an elongated wait although I do usually arrive very early in the morning so that could be why. If you were using DME just make sure to leave enough time 2-3 hours to get back to your resort before planning anything else such as an advanced dining reservation.

To book DME you will need your flight information and resort confirmation number. If you are booking more than a month in advance you will receive something in the mail (US and Canada residents only), if there is not a month between the day you book DME and your check in day you will not get anything in the mail but that is not a big deal. You will get emails from them. The bus runs 24 hours and can be found on level 1 with the rental cars, B side. Guests who are flying into Orlando International Airport from another country must follow the US Customs and Border Protection process and claim their luggage after disembarking the plane. They can then proceed to Disney's Magical Express Welcome Center

DME has plush, comfortable, themed seats with a video that plays on the multiple CVS as entertainment. Most of the motor coaches have bathrooms in the rear. It's an exciting ride.
